How did we get here?
On May 8th, 2018, I underwent the knife for the 4th time in 8 years to repair my leg.
The issue this time? The hardware was too long. It was sticking up 1.5 inches above my hip bone and was shredding my IT band and the muscles in my gluteus. It was also affecting my back and quad because I was overcompensating. (Just think how many times we do this in business.)
To be honest, initially I was finding all of these ways in my head to figure out how to do nothing. The thought of one more surgery, another recovery, and relying on others for help again was just not what I wanted.
It’s no different than how I feel when I know I need to make a change in business – I don’t want to take a step back in order to move forward. Then, all of a sudden, I have a few good days and I start questioning myself about whether I really need to make a change.
So, my husband, Denny, suggested – in order to make myself feel better – I come up with a goal to focus on rather than thinking about the surgery, the pain, and the recovery.
I chose to decide when I would make my next run. I didn’t have to know how I was going to get there…just that I WAS going to get there.
Denny and I considered my recovery time and the locations that would be available to run once I’d recovered. I decided on the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon, my favorite race of all time. It’s being held January 19-20, 2019, in Phoenix.
QUESTION: Would some of you be willing to join us and run with Denny and me January 19th – 20th in Phoenix?
I know what you’re thinking: “I’ve never run before.” But, just because you’ve never done something doesn’t mean you can’t.
Now wait, wait, wait…you can follow the method of my mentor, Jeff Galloway, which is the run-walk-run method. You run for a period of time and then you walk. We will run for 3 minutes and walk for 1 minute. It does a lot of things for you when you run/walk this way. It helps you finish strong instead of slowing down at the end; it also reduces the lactic acid buildup in your muscles so you aren’t so sore the next day and you will actually run faster than if you ran the whole thing.
I know growth is always built on a series of wins, so let me throw this out to you…the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon has a Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K, so there’s something for everyone. Will you choose one of the runs and make the decision to join me?
